Collegiate Chapel

At the heart of Hoani Tapu is the Collegiate Chapel of St John the Evangelist, Tāmaki Makaurau’s oldest ecclesiastical building, designed by Frederick Thatcher in 1847. This sacred space, rich in history, continues to inspire worship and community life today.  Daily worship is the cornerstone of life at Hoani Tapu, nurturing personal faith, fostering communal spirituality, and grounding studies in prayer and reflection.  Our services celebrate the rich diversity of the Three Tikanga Church community, blending liturgies, traditions, Te Rawiri/the Book of Common Prayer and A New Zealand Prayer Book. Together, we honour the sanctity of God, people, and the land—te tapu o te Atua, o te tangata, o te whenua.  The chapel is led by our Pou Karakia, the Reverend Mele Prescott who along with Te Waka Tūāpapa (our Formation Team), works with students to create worship experiences that are innovative, transformative, and deeply rooted in tradition.
